Quotes From 2012

Every year, at the beginning of the year, I send out 'quotable quotes' that
I've either heard or read during the previous year. I'm a little late this
year - Sorry. These are the quotes from 2012. You may have heard some of
them but, I'm sure, not all of them. Hope you enjoy.

"It is easier to build strong children, than to repair broken men." -
Fredrick Douglas

“The only purpose of a government is to protect a man’s rights, which
means: To protect him from physical violence. A proper government is
only a policeman, an agent of man’s self-defense, and, as such, may resort
to force only against those who start the use of force. The only proper
functions of a government are: The police, to protect you from criminals;
the army, to protect you from foreign invaders; and the courts, to protect
your property and contracts from breach or fraud from others, to settle
disputes by rational rules, according to objective laws.” - John Galt in
Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged (1957)

"Do not be fooled by a belief that progressives, leftists hate guns. Oh, no,
they do not. What they hate is guns in the hands of those who are not
marching in lock step of their ideology. They hate guns in the hands of
those who think for themselves and do not obey without question. They
hate guns in those whom they have slated for a barrel to the back of the
ear." - A recent article in the Russian Newspaper, "Pravda".

"There are two methods, or means, and only two, whereby man’s needs
and desires can be satisfied. One is the production and exchange of
wealth; this is the economic means. The other is the uncompensated
appropriation of wealth produced by others; this is the political means”
(which, by its very nature, is not satisfactory at all). - Albert Jay Nock

“A nation is the more prosperous today the less it has tried to put
obstacles in the way of the spirit of free enterprise and private initiative.
The people of the United States are more prosperous than the inhabitants
of all other countries because their government embarked later than the
governments in other parts of the world upon the policy of obstructing
business.” - Ludwig von Mises,

“We are steadily asked about the age at which to teach young people to
shoot. The answer to this obviously depends upon the particular
individual; not only his physical maturity but his desire. Apart from these
considerations, however, I think it important to understand that it is the
duty of the father to teach the son (or daughter) to shoot. Before the
young leave home, there are certain things they should know and certain
skills they should acquire, apart from any state-sponsored activity.
Certainly the youngster should be taught to swim, strongly and safely, at
distance. And young people of either sex should be taught to drive a
motor vehicle, and if at all possible, how to fly a light airplane. I believe a
youngster should be taught the rudiments of hand-to-hand combat,
unarmed, together with basic survival skills. The list is long, but it is a
parent’s duty to make sure that the child does not go forth into the world
helpless in the face of its perils. Shooting, of course, is our business, and
shooting should not be left up to the state.” - Colonel Jeff Cooper

“There exists a law, not written down anywhere, but inborn in our hearts,
a law which comes to us not by training or custom or reading, a law
which has come to us not from theory but from practice, not by
instruction but by natural intuition. I refer to the law which lays down
that, if our lives are endangered by plots or violence or armed robbers or
enemies, any and every method of protecting ourselves is morally right.” -
Marcus Tullius Cicero (106– 43 BC)

“Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.” - Mao Tse-tung
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Believe in your cause. The stronger your belief, the stronger your
motivation and perseverance will be. You must know it in your heart that
it is a worthwhile cause and that you are fighting the good fight. Whether
it is the need to contribute or the belief in a greater good, for your buddy,
for the team or for your country, find a reason that keeps your fire
burning. You will need this fire when the times get tough. It will help you
through when you are physically exhausted and mentally broken and you
can only see far enough to take the next step.” - Master Sergeant Paul R.
Howe, U.S. Army (Retired)
“It is an uphill struggle, but I wish that we could distinguish more
carefully between freedom and liberty. These conditions are not the same,
though they are certainly related. Freedom is the absence of restraint— a
physical circumstance. Liberty, on the other hand, is a political situation
denoting the lawful capability of the citizen to defend himself and his
near and dear without interference from the state. Note that the
Declaration of Independence forcibly and particularly establishes the
blessings of liberty upon ourselves and our posterity. I like to carry a
pocket copy of the Declaration, plus the Constitution, in my travels. It is a
good thing to have in hand when discussions arise.” - The late Colonel
Jeff Cooper
There are some politicians, on both sides and including President
Obama, who believe a One-World Government should be achieved. -
"With many competing governments, there is always somewhere to flee if
one system becomes too repressive. Power corrupts. A one-world
government would place that much greater power into the hands of the
person or the clique ruling it. There would be no competing system to
oppose him or the clique. World peace is an illusion. Most militaries are
used to kill their own people, to preserve those in power, and to repress
those who are out of power. If there was a one-world government, there is
no doubt those in power would use the military or the police to repress
those they disliked. The political theorists always seem to think that
bigger governments or organizations are better. I disagree completely, by
the way. Smaller countries and governments are often better for the
average citizen." - Anna Chin, CIA Analyst
Although I am often fairly moved by patriotic rhetoric, I have  always
been generally unmoved by that which is political or religious. Some odd
turn of my mind seems to examine every phrase for hidden motivations
and meanings. - CAH
"The problems we face today are there because the people who work for a
living are now outnumbered by those who vote for a living." --
Ode of Remembrance
“They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary
them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember
them.”
Max Velocity. "Patriot Dawn: The Resistance Rises"
"Political Correctness is an idiosyncratic belief, fostered by a delusional,
illogical minority, and rabidly ballyhooed by an unscrupulous
mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely
possible to pick up a turd by the clean end." - Anonymous (NOTE: I once
was required to be PC to avoid conflict while I was on the job. It took me
a while to break the habit after I retired. I'm calmer and healthier now.)
"Looks are only skin deep, but stupid goes all the way to the bone." -
Chessley Grogah (cmsix)
I like intelligent people. I like intelligent people who are also smart even
more. As I grow older, I find that I have no time to waste on intelligent
people who do stupid and foolish things. - CAH
I wonder if freedom of speech is such a good thing if it lets people who
are trying to agitate and trying to change things for their advantage
should have free use of it. Freedom of speech is wonderful in a mature
society and civilization, but in truth almost no one likes it. Many would
claim it was wonderful and then would be disgusted by way it is used by
others. " - John Argent
